Oklahoma is Ok.

Mike St. Jean covers a point

The first two weeks of January are Oklahoma time for me ,the dogs and a few good clients. Needless to say everyone including the dogs love it , the country is big so the pointers really have to stretch out . These are wild birds, unlike preserve Quail or the "tight sitting "Bobwhites of the South East these guys tend to run a lot ,which keeps things interesting and  due to the lack of moisture the scenting conditions are very poor. I have been running 2-3 dogs per loop and we have been moving  6-7 coveys per day ,even with that many dogs on the ground we are missing coveys  as the dogs don't pick up the scent , the covey runs off, or a combo of the two.
BUT it sure is fun !The Ranch I am on really looks after their habitat  ,In 2008   the Ranch became the first Private Important Birding Area in Oklahoma to be  listed by the  Audubon , the cattle are also fat and happy !
This season's  bird numbers are better than last year's and as usual my fingers are crossed for next year's hatch as the Bobwhite Quail is a fantastic game bird and as far as I am concerned Oklahoma is the place to "chase" them.
