Spreading the word: Dahlberg Diver

Over a year ago, Jay Lee sent me two flies, a Humpy and a Dahlberg Diver. Last night I tried my best to instruct how to tie the Dahlberg Diver at the local fishing club.

It takes some time until we reach the level of perfection Jay has, but the word is out there. We are going to catch pike soon.

Thanks Jay!

Back to business

Of the last three weeks we spent only one night at home.

Respect

My grandfather was a farmer. He was also a fisherman, but I wouldn't call him an angler as he preferred fishing with nets. And he caught a lot of fish in his lifetime. Those fishes he caught were the meat; he fished because his family needed it. But he loved it.

As long as I can remember I've always been greatly interested in fishing. Never the nets, which was a disappointment for him I am sure, but the angling. In my childhood, we spend the summers at my grandfather's farm, and I fished most of the time. I caught only a fraction of what my grandfather caught.

There is a single moment in my life that I remember my grandfather best, it was the moment when I landed a big pike and my grandfather was there, and he looked at me and said finally with certain respect in his voice “Well Olli, it looks like you are fisherman after all.”

It still feels good.

Pike

From Misc 2007

As you can see, my boat is waiting for the ice to clear off from the lakes. After it happens pike will spawn. This is one of two periods of the year when biggest fish are in the shallow water near the shoreline. They eat nothing while spawning, after that they are hungry. I have killed my share of pikes in my youth, fishing with spin fishing gear, but fly fishing for pike is new to me. I have some flies tied for pike, but I'll probably need just a few more. And I also have a rod to be finished, before I can find out is there a hidden pike fly fisherman within me.

Dahlberg Diver. Tied by Jay Lee

The Dahlber Diver is a pike fly. This one is tied by Jay Lee. Thank you Jay!

I'll be casting a fly for pike in May, but not this one; it looks far too good to be ripped to pieces by pike's sharp teeth.

Take a look how well this monofil supports the zonker tail.

And this is how the deer hair should be clipped.
