Fly Fishing Report For Bell Creek, CA

Went fishing to Bell Creek (near Pinecrest, CA) on 7/8/11 with my friend Darrel. It was his first time fly fishing.

Where: Bell Creek at Crabtree Trailhead
Who: Jon and Darrel
What: 9 Brook Trout (8 for me and 1 for Darrel)
Pattern: VFG Nymph

We fished for five hours along about a quarter of a mile stretch of the creek, near the parking lot for Crabtree Trailhead. I caught my eight trout all out of an eddie behind a large boulder partly lying in the river. The fish were small, the biggest being 9 inches long. But there were plenty and they were hungry!

Highland Lakes, CA Fly Fishing Report

Highland Lakes, CA

Finally got my photos of fly fishing at highland lakes last summer uploaded. I know they are low quality but they were taken on an old film camera and had to be scanned in.

Fishing Info:
Place: Highland Lakes, CA
Fish: Brook Trout
Number of Fish: 10+ (Don't remember exact amount)

We fished at Highland Lakes for several hours on two different days. All the fish were caught on stonefly nymphs except for one on a mayfly imitation. The most were caught in early afternoon. The fish ranged from 8-13 inches, not bad for brookies. Enjoy the photos.

Glacier Creek, CO Trout Grand Slam

Date: August 24, 2010
"Grand Slam" is four trout species in one day. Today I caught cutthrout, rainbows, browns and brook trout plus one cut-bow and all from one creek. A great day fishing.
Glacier creek is in Rocky Mountain National Park. My guide for the day was Frank Drummond, out of Estes Park Anglers. Frank also hand-crafts bamboo rods, local unique flies and can be reached by email at frank@brushcreekcane.com and phone at 303-810-4538. Also visit Frank at his web site www.brushcreekcane.com.
Method and flies: Several Dry flies including Royal Trude #14, Parachute Adams #16, PMD #16 worked well. A couple fish were taken on a dropper described as a "Frank's Special" #16.
Comments: We fished the creek about two miles up from Glacier Basin Campground. The creek is small and mostly pocket water fishing. I used a 3 wt 8.5' rod, but should have used a 7'. The creek required near surgical casting techniques to very difficult locations of very small holding areas. Without Frank pointing out these little holding areas I would have passed them by. I learned several new techniques that will aid this seasoned fisherman. Everyday fishing is a good day, but four species and one sub-species in one day from one creek is indeed special. Thank you Frank!

Fool's Paradise by John Gierach

John Gierach is by far, the leading author when it comes to fly fishing and all the related stories that fly fishers experience. "Fool's Paradise" is another masterpiece in his long line of literary hits. If you have not yet experienced a book written by Gierach, now is the time to start. Represented in all of his books is the notion that fly fishing is more about the travel, the friends, and the reflective stories that inevitably occur while fly fishing. This book is a must read, pick one up and enjoy.

Profile of Burney Creek, CA

Burney Creek is located in Northern California near the community that shares it's name Burney, CA. Burney Creek is situated near legendary fisheries, such as, the Pit River and Hat Creek. As seen in the photo above, the main attraction for Burney Creek is the 129 foot Burney Falls. The falls, river, store and campground are the focus of MacArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The falls were once called the 8th Wonder of the World by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Burney Creek is fed by an underground spring and has a healthy population of rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Fly fishing anglers above the falls will run into predominantly brookies, while below the falls and all the way to Lake Britton rainbows and browns. The lower river is a geology lesson with sections of a white powdery basalt that create stark contrasts of colors. At times, trout lying near the bottom can be seen easily against the white basalt background. Fly fishing on Burney Creek can relinquish stunning pictures of nature along with the pictures of trout caught on a fly.
