Do we need to discuss wading safety??????

Lees Ferry, AZ.... Point of NO Return!

Unless you are river rafting, there is a Point of NO Return just down river from the launch area at Lees Ferry, AZ. Make sure the engine starts in your boat, before you push away from the trailer or dock!

Camping, Lees Ferry Style

Great idea....but what ya gonna do if it rains?

Sweet Ride

Are you sure this thing will get us to the dam?

Some Added Perspective

Fly fishing at the base of Glen Canyon Dam at Lees Ferry adds a perspective that is difficult to match. The forces of nature and a manmade engineering marvel create an atmosphere that draws on a variety of emotions. One that struck me was awe. The monumental size of the shear canyon walls and the BIG water that over time, carved the canyon we now fish in. What an experience.

Headed to the dam....

April in Arizona can be unpredictable. We battled the rain and cold on our way to Glen Canyon Dam at Lees Ferry. It all paid off!

Babbitt's Flyfishing Specialists, Flagstaff AZ

If you are looking to fly fish in places like Oak Creek Canyon or Lees Ferry, AZ, and you are staying in the the Flagstaff area, there are only a few fly shop options. While on a family trip to Flagstaff for some winter fun (sledding and skiing), we visited Babbitt's Flyfishing Specialists in the Old Town area. It's a nice little Orvis shop that even includes the typical fly shop dog. My kids pointed him out after I walked right past him, lying in his comfortable chair. Grant, the guy behind the counter, was very helpful and engaging, two traits that every person in the retail fly fishing industry needs to master. We enjoyed our visit to the shop, but I quickly became jealous when Grant mentioned he was heading up to Lees Ferry the next day. I suspect he wanted to get in some last minute fly fishing in before the El Nino driven storm will drop up to 8 feet of snow on the area.

I recommend visiting the shop and stock up for your Northern Arizona fly fishing adventures. Here's how to find them:

Profile of Lees Ferry, Arizona

Lees Ferry on the Colorado River is regarded by many as one of the premier fly fishing tail waters anywhere. The area is rich with history, including early Mormon settlers and the home for many Native American tribes. Lees Ferry rose to prominence after the completion of Glen Canyon Dam. The steady stream of cold water flowing from the depths of Lake Powell, creates a fishery that is unparalleled. The Rainbow Trout have flourished in this area of the Colorado and fly fishers from around the world travel here for the thrill of catching trophy trout deep within the majestic scenery of Marble Canyon.

Lees Ferry is located in northern Arizona about 16 miles down river from the dam and the town of Page, Arizona. Fly fishers can access the Rainbows below the boat ramp area or by boat to the upper reaches of the river. Because of the constant cold water temperatures, the majority of aquatic insect life are small midges.

Indicator nymphing can be very productive, but don't overlook a dry/dropper for the occasional trout seeking a dry fly imitation. If fly fishers have a bucket list of places to fly fish during their lifetime, we are sure that Lees Ferry would hover somewhere near the top of the list.
