Dry summer

It has been dry summer here in Finland. In Nokisenkoski river water discharge is currently only about 21 cubic meters (average of this time of the year is about 40 cubic meters). Water is running about 30 cm (1 feet) lower than normal.

This makes fishing a bit slow. Those nice lake-run Brown Trouts do not make normal feeding trips to Nokisenkoski at night time. But I will try it anyway.

Other than that I had a nice 3 week summer vacation - mostly quality time with the family and friends. I made some fly fishing trips (I'll post fish/fishing pictures later) and broke my cellphone (two days after it had been dried after the water hazard it experienced before) while fixing the roof of my parent's summer house.

Slovenia

I don't know if it is next summer's vacation, but in some future vacation I will take my family (and fly rod) to Slovenia.

Here are some links to pictures of fly fishing in Slovenia:

Summer Vacation

My summer vacation starts next week. And that it great! Here is a picture from last years vacation. It's from River Kitka in Kuusamo, Finland.

Water proof... part 2

I just got my cellphone back - and it works fine! Camera also started to work some 3-4 days after the water hazard...

Rod Building - Part 3

I have spent too much time thinking and planning my rod building project. I should be doing it at autumn when the rivers close.

I have general idea how fly rod is build - or, in fact, assembled.

But what kind of rod should I build? I do 98 % of my fishing with 5 weight rod, so I have different length 5 weight rods and I do not want to build another like those. Currently I have to options. Either 3 weight 9'6" blank with "slow parabolic" action and 7 weight 10' blank with "medium fast" action.

These blanks are designed for totally different kinds of fly fishing. The light one would be lovely for nymphing and dry fly fishing. The heavier one should do well in still waters and big trout streams and when the water runs high.

There are many more of course. I will update this post or add new one when I have the time.

Rod Building - Part 1

For over a year I have been thinking that I should build a fly rod. Lately I have been discussing about it with my wife - so things are getting official. In next winter (thankfully still very far a way - and you know what I mean if you have been in Finland at winter), I will build a rod.

I have been told, and I have read, that rod building not rocket science. In fact I have come to believe that it is not difficult at all. Hopefully I will be surprised. I think that the actual manual work is not that difficult. The difficult part is those actions that proceed manual work. Please correct me if I am wrong and hit the Comment button that should be somewhere below.

So, how do I build a rod? This is something new for me - so the first step is to collect information. Sources for this information are discussions with people that have build rods, books and magazine articles, and naturally the Internet.

I have been discussing with some persons that have build fly rods (they are responsible of my impression that rod building is not difficult). I have been reading articles in Internet and magazines about rod building. Maybe I do another round of discussion, read some more articles, and order a book from Amazon.
