Holy Crap!

Where was this brute hiding when we were there?

The Story:
So many things were going through my mind.... I spotted the large fish holding in the tail end of the run. The first cast produced a swipe at my fly. The second cast I saw "jaws" swipe at it... a different fish? Must be. This was confusing... what size are these two fish? Perhaps the first fish I saw was not 20" but really 10" and the second fish is the 20 incher? Another cast produced...drum roll... nothing. I thought about the situation, then thought about it again. I have a sink-tip on and a large streamer, damn. I thought about switching colors, reels, lines, tippet, leader and a hundred other things. Thinking I was faced with a large 22+ fish I didn't want to blow it... If I would have know it was 32" I would have blown it for sure ; ) I left on the sink-tip, didn't bother with an indicator and tied on a SJ worm figuring it's a probable take. I cast up stream and set the drift....rejected. Sh#$! Now what, should I make another cast? Change the fly? I opened my box and grabbed a Bennett Stone (A.K.A Pat's Stone / A.K.A Rubber Legs). A good drift produced.... a spook? Sh#$!! Damn!! F*^@!!!! The spook turned out to be more of a move, slightly over and up to the left, I can see it holding. To hell with it, I made another cast and drifted it down. The fish nonchalantly moved its head slightly over, did it take it? am I tight? what happened?... I set the hook. Nothing happened. I pulled again felling resistance but nothing happened. Am I snagged? A good hard tug awoke the beast. I now realized that this 20+ inch fish might be a little bit bigger, because it was running up river at will. The fish stopped at a near by snag before turning around for a run downstream. As it ran past me I saw the actual size. I believe I yelled "help" out loud : ) Not really sure why but I remember thinking how am I going to land this thing by myself, but I managed. The fish tried to do everything you can think of to get free. I would love to tell you that the fish fought for an hour but it was around 5 minutes. When it came to hand I realized how big this fish really is. Grizz called it a "Trophy's Trophy, it's what trophy Trout want to grow up and be". We were both so happy to see such a beauty. Truly a humbling experience.... Truly a fairy tale.... Oh how I love the Rockies.
I was shaking uncontrollably for awhile. A million thoughts were going through my head. Coming back to Rocky Mountain Trout after a Salt Water stint I feel its finally come full circle. This fish is what I have been dreaming about my entire life, since I was a Kid... actually I think I was dreaming of a smaller version of this fish but this will surely do. I never thought it would happen and honestly, a part of me didn't want it to for fear that the search would end. I enjoy the search more than anything, its actually what drives my fishing, my vision, my life. The finding part is supposed to be small teasers luring you back again and again, never to end. This is a Trout of a lifetime. I was at a loss for words then and still am now.... I am so stoked and on the river I almost cried.

As the hole turns...

The house hole, new & improved, with walls...
The garage hole, with forms, ooohhhh...
The spectacular view from the hole, truly inspiring!

Maine Saltwater fishing report 10/18/08

Ben Lowe getting it done...This kid is as fishy as they come!!!

The Striper fishing is done for the year...at least up here on the coast of Maine. The Tuna have gone & so have the Bluefish....Codfishing remains an option. Inshore thick schools of Mackeral & harbor Pollock remain abundant so if you're in the mood for one last light tackle fix, head on down to a local wharf and have some fun. Macks are a blast on a 5 weight fly rod.

Some of the tidal rivers have little known runs of "sea run" Brown Trout. This fishery should start to pick up in the coming months....also the St. George river has an excellent Brown Trout fishery and remains open to anglers year round.

My guiding season has come to an end & I'd like thank all the anglers who fished with me this season. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you again next year.

One More For The Records!

Having returned to the United States, regular Arundell Arms angling ace, Cathy Newman, emailed us a photograph of her 2008 salmon. Caught using a copper Mepps no.3, Cathy hooked the 8lb hen fish in Top Pool on beat 3 (River Lyd). After a boisterous fight in the fast water, the fish tired enough for Tim to net it. Well done Cathy - we look forward to seeing you next year!

VIDEO: Rising Trout

Here's a short video to ease the pain of the closed season!
While shooting some video footage for our Beginners' Courses, we came across this fish, feeding greedily in King Pool on the Lyd. Hats off to the wild westcountry brown trout... see you in March!

VIDEO: Salmon Fishing The River Lyd

There's nothing like catching a salmon to order! Here's a new video, shot in the first week of October 2008. Arundell Arms instructor David Pilkington plays, lands and releases a salmon of around 8 1/2lb in Blue Charm Pool on Home beat of the River Lyd. David used a 9ft 6in 7-wt outfit (ideal tackle for the Lyd), and the fish took a Cascade variant fished on an intermediate line.
Enjoy!

Cold Cold Colorado, small fish and the most BAD ASS TATTOO EVER!!!!!!!!!

So yeah i don't know how to make pictures small or organized for that matter so i am just going to post them how i see them and maybe Alex will fix it later if he feels the need....... and i cant spell or do that grammar shit for the life of me.

and now we see here the first FGFF Tattoo! it is taken of a huge brown that Alex caught up in The white Mountains. And yes this will be fully colored as soon as I get the money. Also a Huge thanks to Ward from Area 51 Tattoo to help convince me to getthe fully colored fish instead of the green logo, Nothing wrong with the green logo but this fish will look amazing.

you will see here a Small trout that i caught. The little fart put up one hell of a fight tho. Thanks to Rich at Flies and Lies I can Finally tie a good looking egg pattern.

And in this Photo we have people i worked with over the Summer, I know this is has nothing to do with fat Guy Fly Fishing, but you know what, This was taken in the Buck Snort Saloon. A Place where the Fat guys went when Alex and Aaron were up in Colorado. This bar has just about everything you need, except whiskey. its a long drive up a very nasty dirt road where a drunk driver could fall off the side without a problem. So don't drive drunk back from this place. With the Dollar bills hanging all over the bar, the graffiti all over the walls and tables(they do not condone that you mark on the tables), to some suprisingly decent food! Now I say this about the food, because you walk in and see wood stacks, a creeking floor and a pool table. Out on the back patio a creek just below your feet. It seems like a biker bar or an old miners bar. the food you would expect to be like hot dogs, fried chicken, (you know the chicken thats been in the fryer so long it turns to rubber), and any other crap you would eat somewhere where they dont care. The truth is their menu is quite nice with a great selection. Trust me you are fed, they really put a large amount of food on the plate for the price.
