When the dam breaks, you feed the undesirables to Tuesday.

The fish remaining in the lake most likely would not survive being transported to another lake, "and even if we could, most are carp," the VP said. "Where would we put them? Most urban lakes are always looking for ways to get rid of carp."

So what do you do? Feed them to alligators, of course. Duh.

...and the rest of the fish were washed to a dry grave when most of the 3,065 acre-feet of water blasted down the usually dry Salt River wash bed.

I can only imagine there was a Phoenician opportunist downstream somewhere furiously stripping a crayfish pattern through the muddy deluge hoping to become a legend when he pins some poor confused bastard large mouth bass where no fisherman has gone before.

I will be the guy wading around in the mud rigged to the teeth loading up on my roughfish hero shots.

In the end, it's just one less fishy place in this damn desert, at least for a couple years.

More story here and here.

White Mountains: Most of the time the it felt like this...

Get up real early and eat a massive egg, steak, cheese and salsa burrito to get the bowels all randy. Load up the truck, strap the pontoon to the back and walk back inside to take a massive wall-expanding buttery dump that will inevitably lead to itchy-b-hole 20 minutes later.

Gather rods, put on your waders and boots and back your truck out into the street. Take the pontoon boat off the truck and set it in the middle of the road. Put on fins, and rig rods, place yourself on the seat and proceed to punch yourself in the face continuously for 2 hours while a buddy sprays you with the hose.

Put boat back on truck, unrig rods, take waders off, scratch itchy b-hole, drive truck back into garage and start drinking and bitching and wondering why you didn't catch any fish.

I might have taken something to ease the pain....
Most of the time it felt like that.... But not sightfishing with ants on Christmas Tree...like a god damn cornucopia of awesomeness...

Many Apache trout.
Super ultra short report version brought to you by Captain Morgan 100 proof. More to come... probably.

Confession: A bad day of fishing...it happens

The saying goes, "A bad day of fishing is better than a good day doing anything else." Hmmmm. I think this is true only 99.5% of the time, as proven by a recent experience on my beloved North Fork of the Flathead in Northwest Montana. It wasn't THAT bad...only half-a-percentage bad. But that half-percentage will be hard to forget.

I started the day excited to shoot an episode of Trout TV with Glacier Raft Company on my home river. The North Fork is the western boundary to my stomping grounds, Glacier National Park. I know how to fish this river. Well, it's an easy river to fish. It's beautiful, clear and full of native Westslope Cutthroat trout that aren't too picky or spooky. I generally know which bugs to use and how to present them, since I guided fishing trips at GRC many years ago on the North Fork, and I still fish there often. I felt confident that we'd come away with an amazing episode. Plus, my friend and GRC veteran Marc Evans was our guide. He's among the very best in the biz, and is the most requested guide at the Company. So I knew he'd get us into fish and help me iron out the many crimps in my angling ability along the way.

That's what getting cocky gets ya.
A half-mile into our day, I boated a gorgeous 17" cutbow--the nicest fish I've caught on that stretch in awhile. I don't have any still pictures, because the biggest beauties are reserved strictly for video. Shortly afterward, Marc got me into a fat 15" cutty. Great start.
Then I missed a lunker.
Then I missed a LUNKER.
Then I caught no fewer than 45 8" cutbows.
Then I ate nine Nutter Butters and drank a Miller Lite.
Then I caught a bunch of whitefish--considered trashfish in our area.
Then I set the hook on what I thought was a fatty and ended up yanking a four-inch cutty up out of the water, over the boat and onto the other bank. I rescued the wee flying fish, jumped back into the boat and proceeded to whack a Batman Nymph on the rod in a frenzied back cast.
Then I BROKE one of Marc's shiny Winston rods in what can only be classified as a terrible quagmire of ego-shredding errors.

Then it got windy. Not tourist-fisherman windy, but legit windy. 30-mile-per-hour steady winds and even harder gusts made it impossible to get any good sound out of our microphones.
I kept casting. And despite the beefiest doublehaul I could muster, I tangled droppers. I over-mended. I under-mended. I sucked.

At one point Marc said, "Um, Hil, what can I do to get that look off your face?" I said, "Um, tell Trout TV to hire a host who can fish."

I'm definitely not the meltdown type. I've always felt privileged and grateful just to be on the water and fish. I swear I'm not a negative person, a whiner or fit-thrower. And I don't' think I'm a river diva... But that day, for just a moment, with my arm twitching as I threw as hard as I could through the angry wind, I remember pouting, a bad day doing anything else would be better than this day of fishing.

We rescheduled the shoot. We're going back to the North Fork later this month.
It will be another day. A super day. A day that will hopefully cancel out the stinkin' half-a-percentage that briefly ruined the old adage.
But I'm going to bring extra Nutter Butters and Miller Lite just in case.

Maine Striper Fishing Report July 28th, 2010

Maine Saltwater Fishing Report July 28, 2010; Kennebec River Striper Fishing Remains Solid

This past week has been very busy for us...we've mostly focused on the Striped Bass fishery of the Kennebec River...7/23,I had Dennis Kelly return from Sag Harbor,NY...Dennis has tagged over 12000 striped bass in his career...He was able to tag close to two dozen stripers on this trip...not too bad for fishing one rod....Dennis is a great fisherman and hopefully i'll see return next month or in September...Most of the Stripers that we're seeing are still holding on the ledges with fast water moving over them...Fly fishing has been best during the lower light levels and at certain stages of the tide...remember that it is mid summer here and the water is warm...the stripers are well fed and they're not feeding with reckless abandon like they'll be doing in september...For the most part, We've been able to pattern where they're feeding and at what stages of the tide
Yesterday I had Ed Hennessey and his grandkids aboard along with Gary Darby. Ed owns beautiful 60 acre Davis Island, located off Port Clyde, Maine. I'd been contacted by island caretaker Gary Darby who expressed to me that they'd been having a hard time getting located on the stripers...I put a game plan together and we hit the Kennebec river in search of Striped Bass...the fishing started off slow but as the incoming tide started to cook...we started scoring good numbers of fish over the ledges...Ed's grand son boated several nice stripers and decided that he wanted to try my trick rod...a short but stout 24" jigging rod designed to jig lake trout through the ice, when the bite is cranking it's a good way to add some fun especially with kids aboard...young Ed was able to boat several more stripers with the trick rod..., which he seemed to be quite proud of Everyone on board caught some nice stripers too...most likely I'll be seeing them again in a week or two.

I was pleased to see the river looking clear and clean yesterday. Clearly the pollution risk from the day before had not made it down to the lower sections. In truth, the river needs a good push of water to liven things up. I found the fish to be spooky and showing little interest in feeding. It'll be evening sessions that score.

There were a few olives hatching, but there were sedge showing in better numbers. A few turned stones exposed many cased caddis - hence the success of the cased patterns.

There were a few solid rises to be heard, but many were tucked away amongst the dense scrub at the side. No cast could get amongst this lot!

Rivers Update

The much-needed rise in water over the last weekend has brought with it a reasonable number of sea trout. 28 fish to 4 1/2lb were landed last week, with most caught at night. A river walk yesterday revealed a few fish in most pools, with many of them being larger specimens of 2-3lb, rather than the school peal that we would be expecting in numbers. The schoolies are starting to arrive now however, with some also being picked up by trout fishers during the day. After a slow start to the season it's now picking up. The total so far stands at 115 sea trout, with the majority of fish released.
Trout fishing is always slow in high summer, but reasonable numbers of fish to 12 inches have been caught, mainly on goldhead nymphs. Evening fishing is certainly the most productive.
Until we get a much larger, sustained rise in river levels, salmon fishing is not really on the cards. All rivers are now back at summer low level.

River Report

Fishing conditions continue to improve as rivers drop to average flows for this time of the season.
Clients have had good -great success on the Bow ,Crowsnest ,Elk, and St.Mary Rivers .Trips to the Oldman Tailwater have also been very successful . depending on the day , hatches of Yellow Sallies ,Caddis,P.M.D.'s Slate Wing and Green Drakes light up the S.W. Alberta and S.E. Britsh Columbia Rivers .As July turns into August Hoppers and other  Terrestrials will  kick in.The way the conditions are falling into place August is going to be awesome.

A close call for the Wellow Brook

The EA responded quickly today to avoid a possible disaster for the Wellow Brook:

Amongst the shallower water and against pale gravel, big grayling are given away by their torpedo-like shapes and deep magenta fins:

A better sized wild brown trout puts in an appearance, taking a long drifted dry fly.

When the terrestrials are falling, a simple, bushy dry with a palmered hackle will work. This example has a barred ginger and badger hackle wound together:

Even in Summer, after a little extra water, a small, but heavy shrimp pattern can produce the goods:

Maine Striper Fishing Report: Kennebec River July 21st, 2010

Maine's Kennebec river is producing some of the best Striped Bass fishing in the State of Maine right now!!!

Today I had the privilege of guiding, Florida Key's guide & Co-host of Versus TV's saltwater fishing show "Saltwater Experience", Capt. Rich Tudor...He seemed intrigued about our ripping currents and big tides so we set the date....After meeting in Bath we headed off to one of the many ledges that have been so productive for us...A quick explanation of what we were going to do and we went lines in...10 seconds later...we were into our first Striper of the morning...next drift we get slammed again...then again and again...Ok Capt. Rich is clearly impressed by our fishery now. We continues to work the area for another hour or so before blasting off downriver chasing the tide...as we slide into the next rip immediately our rods are torqued way over with the weight of hard running stripers. Next drift another double...then a triple....wow...When I crawled out of bed this morning at 3:00am to get prepped fro the trip, I knew that we were going to have a great trip...As always, It was nice to have the chance to showcase the wonderful Striped Bass fishery that we have here in Maine...I didn't let the opportunity pass...Captain Rich got to see first hand what we see on a daily basis as we slid into drift after drift only to be greeted by powerful tugs sreaming drags and rods bent to the grip...

A little info on Versus show "Saltwater Experience" -Captains Tom Rowland and Rich Tudor have won over 200 tournament titles and 7000 + professional, guided days between them. Join them as they share their knowledge of inshore and offshore saltwater fishing in a fun and educational format. Utilizing the latest HD camera equipment and the most skilled production team in outdoor television, Saltwater Experience highlights the natural beauty of the Florida Keys as well as the indigenous wildlife above and below the water.
