In search of Blues

Searching for Blues
On Saturday  Lisa  joined me for a "Desert hike"  in search of Blues or as they are called here in Arizona Scaled Quail. Despite the fact that her feet will still sore from the 60 mile 3 day Susan G Komen "Walk for the Cure" for Breast cancer that she completed last weekend in Phoenix, like the Trooper that she is Lisa loaded up on Advil and off we went. Two long loops in 73 degree temps and very dry &  windy conditions produced two coveys of Blues , I liked it .Lisa  is not a hunter but loves  being out with our Dogs ,we both can't get enough of the great outdoors here in Arizona .
Scaled Quail hunting is very much a "Cat and Mouse ' game and usually goes down   like this ,walk and walk , dogs go on point, if nothing happens re.  no birds get up  then they are running out in  front of the dogs ., I start to circle the area where the dogs originally  pointed  with hopes of connecting with the running birds .or the covey gets up wild , which is usually the case ,the birds are marked then we work the broken up covey ..it can be very intense .
On our first loop Okie Scored on the first point , Sam and Buddy had points on singles from the follow up . On our  next loop we ran Spot and Cruz , we had points on a covey that jumped wild and landed somewhere on a Mountain side ,so up we went but where unable to connect with these birds .
No-worries we had some great dog work , spent some Q time together and we both agreed that being together out in the Desert is more fun  than Dinner and a Movie .Our Dogs also agreed.
